Run Gmail or Facebook from your Dock without using a web browser thanks to Fluid, a tool for Mac OS X Leopard that is capable of converting a web application into a desktop application.
All you have to do to take a web application onto your desktop is type in the application’s URL in Fluid's main window, give it a name, indicate the hard drive directory which you want to save it in, and the icon you wish to use.
Not only can Gmail and Facebook have their own desktop version, but also other web services such as: FriendFeed, YouTube, Google Reader, Campfire, Flickr, Muxtape, Tumblr, Delicious and .Mac.
Use the 'Convert to extra SSB menu' function from the main menu on the application you have created to take it to the menu bar.
